Despite being a small mountain town, Žabljak possesses a unique charm. Located high in the Durmitor region, it serves as a gateway to some of Montenegro’s best mountain trails. From its cluster of quaint shops and houses with steeply pitched roofs, you can set off on foot into the dense pine forests and venture toward Lake Lokvice.

For more experienced hikers, there are challenging trails leading to various peaks and passes. However, the Lokvice trail is particularly popular, as it features a small mountain hut and several sheltered camping spots—perfect for multi-day exploration of Durmitor.

No visit to Žabljak is complete without sampling some of the best traditional Montenegrin cuisine. Expect hearty meat specialties served with local cheese, kajmak (a creamy dairy spread), and a fresh onion, tomato, and cucumber salad. To complete the experience, try a glass of homemade rakija, the strong fruit brandy found throughout the Balkans.

On your way back to the coast, stop at Lovćen National Park, home to the famous Njegoš Mausoleum. This monumental structure sits atop Mount Lovćen and offers panoramic views of the Montenegrin coast and inland mountains. The 461-step climb to the mausoleum is well worth the effort for the breathtaking vistas at the top.

Before heading back to the coastline, visit the traditional village of Njeguši, known for its delicious Montenegrin prosciutto and cheese. Enjoy a hearty meal at a local restaurant, where you can sample some of Montenegro’s authentic flavours.
