The Roman mosaics in Risan offer a fascinating glimpse into life during the Roman Empire. Originally an important Illyrian settlement, Risan, known as Risinium in Roman times, flourished under Roman rule during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Dating to the 2nd century AD, Villa Urbana (also known as Villa Romana) is traditionally believed to have been an elegant Roman residence, distinguished by its intricate mosaic floors. Today, visitors can explore the villa’s preserved foundations and beautifully restored mosaics from elevated walkways. Among its most remarkable features is a rare depiction of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep.
